Palin says YES to cross-border incursions into Pakistan

A couple weeks back I posted about what you could do when 2 wars were not enough — invade your ally! Yes, we are running across the Afghan/Pakistan border when necessary (when we want?) to “take out” Al Qaeda operatives if we have “good intelligence” that they are nearby. Marines mostly are sent to do this.

Anyway, I think it is a pretty bad idea because we don’t have many friends in the middle east and Pakistan is not liking this so much. (I wonder how we would feel if some country were doing this to us?) Anyway, McCain chastized Barack Obama for saying he also agrees with this policy not because it is WRONG but because you should not say it “out loud.” Right — you should keep it a secret, deny, deny, deny (like we did about Cambodia and Laos) to protect the troops carrying out these illegal missions. But Palin, when pressed by a 20 something guy in a t-shirt (our best political reporter on Palin to date!!!! Give that man a job!!) also indicates she is in favor of it.

Nice – watch it here. Warning: she is increasingly adorable!

Bob says this is not as important because “it is a casual comment”. I agree but since she does not do many serious interviews, this is what we have to go on.

    And McCain retracts it.

Oopsie! She did not mean it and people should not be sticking microphones into people’s faces and thinking that is a person’s policy position.

Well, put her on Meet the Press so we don’t have to rely on this kind of snippet if we are interested in her position.

They went on Couric’s show last night TOGETHER to retract it TOGETHER and he wouldn’t let Palin get in a word edgewise even when he SAID he was going to let her speak for HERSELF. And he could not backtrack from what she said fast enough!

Get a load of this: Panic is setting in at debate prep HQ:

    Breaking News from Big Eddie:
McCain Camp insiders say Palin “clueless”
Capitol Hill sources are telling me that senior McCain people
are more than concerned about Palin.

The campaign has held a mock debate and a mock press conference; both are being described as “disastrous.” One senior McCain aide was quoted as saying, “What are we going to do?” The McCain people want to move this first debate to some later, undetermined date, possibly never. People on the inside are saying the Alaska Governor is “clueless.”

To which I say: ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
But I am not overconfident, not underestimating her, or misunderestimating her for that matter, nosiree . . .

Only select comments are valid when taken out of casual conversation – something about ‘guns and religion’. I’m sure that must have been a true policy stance….?

http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/2008/09/30/palin_pity/ – A worthwhile read before she’s entirely let off the hook on the basis of outdated, gendered assumptions.

I think Obama believes the guns and religion comment — and it happens to be borne out by a lot of sociological research dating back to Durkheim but very, very badly phrased by Obama I will admit. In any event, that’s not a policy statement like “we should” do this or that.

I agree that we shouldnot let her off the hook. Indeed that is part of the plan — lower expectations so much that if she walks across the stage people think she did OK. We can’t allow that. there has to be some minimum level of competence and we have not seen enough of her to know if she is nervious, ignorant, or maybe even good although the sbits we have are pretty bad including this one. But our not having more to judge her on is the McCain campiagn’s fault; if they let her out we wouldn’t have to rely on such comments to make our decisions. We’ll see Thursday — after that we will know a lot more about her abilities. But I for one, am not willing to let her off the hook not jsut because I am a feminist but also because I think the country needs qualified leadership.
