Headline of the Day

From today’s NYT:

POSSIBLE NAZI THEME OF GRAND PRIX BOSS’S ORGY DRAWS CALLS TO QUIT

Among the admirable aspects of this headline, note the correct use of ‘s to make a possessive out of a singular noun ending in s.

Who knew the Nazis had orgies? And, really? That is a correct thing boss’s?

See page 1 of the third edition of Strunk & White — under “Elementary Rules of Usage”, the first one is, “Form the possessive of singular nouns by adding ‘s. Follow this rule whatever the final consonant. Thus write,

    Charles’s friend
    Burns’s poems
    the witch’s malice”

The learned authors make an exception for the possessive of Jesus (in Jesus’ name), ancient names ending in es or is (Isis’ temple), and formulations such as “for righteousness’ sake”.

“he denied there was a Nazi motif”

    Who knew orgies had motifs?

  4. lankdangle says:

I think orgies most defenietly have a very strong motif. I’ll give you 3 guesses.

Sour cream and onion dip?…………..if you’re lucky.

The enchanting music of Donna Summers? ……….if you’re really lucky.

Sex?…………if you have the correct address.

I could swear that Ms. Bolinger in 11th grade English taught us to do the s’ thing when the possesive ended in s. This is rather disturbing. Now I will have to qestion all that I thought I knew – damn.

NOKA (no obama kool aid): you should certainly question anything you thought I taught you.
