Obama security

OK so after a slow week on the blog (can we have any more job candidates in my department?!?! ) we must get back to serious Controlling Authority issues and this is one:

The Secret Service ordered that Dallas police stop searching bags and using metal detectors at Obama’s recent rally in Dallas (20k people).  The lines were long and the first 17 thousand people seemed so friendly that they just stopped.  I couldn’t make that up

At the same time, the neo-Nazi websites are going crazy and death threats to him are on the rise.

I am not a consipracy theorists generally speaking and have thought that discussion of his safety were a little overblown.  That is not to say that I think he is safe, it was because I thought the standard practices would be followed for all the candidates and I assume that the practices are as good as can be expected and probably better than any place else in the world (they better be given how many guns we have floating around in this country!), but this is a troubling development.

Guns floating around the country? Look at this article about college students’ carrying concealed weapons to class:

Utah allows with the following requirements–

    # Be 21 years old

    # Have no criminal record of violent, immoral or substance-related crime

    # Be mentally competent. I WONDER–WHO GETS TO DECIDE THAT?

Despite the seeming unfairness, I would be fine with all men being declared too mentally incompetent to carry concealed firearms.

(No, I am not packing heat as I type this.)

NBC reported tonight (I actually watched the network news tonight!) that the Secret Service says this report out of Dallas is “not true.” If so, why did they wait two days to correct the record? The blogosphere is going nuts today about what it sees as an apparent indifference to Obama’s safety, which it is all too willing to attribute to the lame-duck incumbent administration.

Yet more from the Star Telegram, which says it has been inundated with emails expressing concern about the security situation at the rally. Note that the Obama campaign is not commenting. They probably see risk of backlash in the furor.

The Star Telegram blog leads with a report that UT student newspaper has endorsed Clinton. What are the polling numbers in Ohio and Texas?

Clinton is still ahead in Ohio, tied with Obama in TX. Her “shame on you” retort Saturday is regarded as a ‘gloves-off’ indicator for the debate tomorrow night and for the final week before this latest firewall.
