I endorse Matt Bai

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying Matt Bai’s contributions to the Times‘ politics blog, The Caucus. In his latest post, he fleshes out the purpose and potential shortcomings of political endorsements.

As a general rule, here’s how I’d look at it: if an endorsement reinforces in some way the main argument you’re trying to make, or if it helps deflect your opponent’s argument about you, then it can have a real impact. Otherwise, it’s just another press release.
