well, the girl (now woman) star of those movies is Alexa Vega and my kids are extras in a movie in which she stars.  Here they are on the set (Alexa has not been violently attacked in real life — that is make up)

Eric will be orchestrating/writing the score.  The movie is to be filmed in one take.  Here is some press.

Rehersals today, filming over the next week.  they are having a great time and learning lots.  They will be skating in the movie.  Now we are gonna have to find them an agent. . . and then a good rehab facility?. . . . hahahaha

I’m Mad and I Can Type

March 19, 2008

First, let me just say, I stole that line from Belle.  (I SWEAR that I did not know her front page cites my book when I planned this post!!)

So Kristen (Elliot Spitzer’s prostitute) seen here whose real name is ashley:

was in a “Girls Gone Wild” video some time ago.  You know, the videos where young women bare their breasts for a trucker hat?  The phenomenon has amazed me for years.  Lots of drunk girls bumping and grinding and flashing their breasts.  How, how, how can this be legal?  They are making contracts (they have to sign something) when they are inebriated, right?  And often, underage.

Did I mention underage?  Yes, she was 17 when she appeared on GGW.  Turns out, in Florida, a 17 year old can legally agree to be photographed naked as long as there is no sexual contact or money exchanged.  And of course, what the gals get is a trucker hat, not money.  WHAT THE F*&%K!?!?!?!

A good book about this:

Female Chauvanist Pigs:  Women and the Rise of Raunch Culture.

What is going on?  Am I just old?  Or have women just completely forgotten that we deserve to be taken seriously?

Tainted Trial

March 19, 2008

Look who dissented on this Supreme Court ruling to overturn a death penalty case in Louisiana.  Racial issues are so pervasive, diverse and multi-layered.  Excuse the pun, bit I think it’s a big mistake to think it’s an either/or, black/white situation.

Just Genius

March 19, 2008

I just want to make clear that this speech is amazing and make it available here.

And, wow – an intelligent, grown-up conversation about race. Shocking. As you know, I think covert racial messages have been at play all along. I hope this ends the stupid conversation about race and begins a fruitful conversation about race and social justice. SOCIAL JUSTICE people.

Debt Relief at Harvard Law

March 19, 2008

If your third year of tuition at Harvard Law School could be forgiven, would you agree to practice public service law for the five years immediately following graduation? Elena Kagan, dean of that law school, announced such a program today. If you intended to go that route all along, then lucky you! Will this cause others not so inclined to sign up anyway? Currently, that year of tuition costs about $40,000. How much will a new associate earn in private practice at a respected firm? It would be interesting to see how many graduates take the offer.

Killed by Non-Lethal Force

and can i also just say?!?!?!

March 18, 2008

that the dalai lama “resigning” is one of the most horrifying, offensive, and troubling news bits that have surfaced in the last 20 years?  Maybe 100.  The man is the symbol of nonviolence who seeks social justice and religious freedom through non-violent means.  Wake up people — we cannot ignore this message of social justice through non-violence.  It actually goes well with the above post about Obama.

The message about peace, justice, and equity that the Dailai Lama preaches is crucial to our success as a nation.

can i just say???????

March 18, 2008

That barack obama gave an amazing speech today?  I am not just saying this because I drink the koolaid or because I want him to win, but because he raises the important issue of the complexity of race.  He talks about his grandmother who loves/loved him dearly and yet was biassed against black men.  YES!!!!!  That is the way it is — we are not biassed or unbiassed, we are sall ome complicated mix of both.

Fundamentally, I worry that this is a version of race relations that is too nuanced to make sense to a lot of people.  At the same time, i think it is an accurate representation of how race works in the minds of ordinay citizens.  It is just more complex thanwe think.

Chinese food inspections…. and bonus link

March 18, 2008

News hit the food-law airwaves today that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), “following approval from the State Department” will install EIGHT (not a lot, but better than the zero that currently exist) inspectors, associated with diplomatic posts, in China, who will be granted “access” to Chinese food production facilities.

One might well believe that this seems late-in-the-game, but I say better late than never!

And for those who like Chinese food, and are thinking about maybe traveling to Beijing at some point soon, an extra special bonus link for you, compliments of the UK’s TimesOnline.

Our competition

March 18, 2008

Slate has started a new blog on legal issues, “Convictions,” clearly in response to our growing influence in the blogosphere.

OK, they have some pretty big guns on staff. But so do we. And isn’t our blog’s name so much better?
